Hassleblad Opens a New Design Center in Italy

Hassleblad-compact.jpg Some companies build their infrastructure where it's cheapest to do so and others put things right close to home. Not Hassleblad. The Swedish camera maker has put its new design center right in the heart of Italy - not far from Venice and the Italian fashion industry

"We plan to capitalize on having the best of both worlds with this new Italian centre and our traditional Swedish camera manufacturing expertise," says chairman and CEO Dr. Larry Hansen. "The region we have chosen for this new centre of design excellence is home to many high-tech manufacturers, including those working in the watch, high end automobile and aerospace industries."

In this new design center, Hassleblad will be creating a new DSLR, a compact camera and its own line of accessories.

The end is getting nearer / la fine s'avvicina

As I have recently posted, the end of traditional photography is imminent. Large cameras will soon become totally obsolete. Obviously there will always be a  small market for them but by and large, most people will not see a need to buy them any longer. Too bad  really but progress cannot be stopped. If people are happy watching a  sports game on a smart phone and all their store images there for later viewing, the need of large super high quality cameras will slowly disappear. High quality will no longer matter. No one will really care anymore. So progress marches on and mediocrity will become the  high standard. Let them be happy in a sea of inane images.

DxO Says Smartphone Image Quality Has Caught up to 2007's Compact Cameras, no kidding.

DxO-mobile.jpg It may not sound like much to offer image quality above point-and-shoots from five years ago, but considering the kind of shape cell phone cameras were in 2007, it's an impressive feat. After all, that's the same year the original iPhone launched with its 2MP camera.

In the video category, Smartphones are actually quite impressive. The Samsung Galaxy StiII beats out the Canon Powershot 100 by a decent margin. Go figure.

Lago D'Orta / Canon G-9

The smallest of the Piedmontese lakes, Lago D'Orta is nevertheless one of the prettiest. It's town that bares the same name is a true gem. We visited on a day after a long rainy period that had risen the lake's waters.
