Have a pleasant weekend

Burano

These wonderful images were made by my very talented wife, Marcy She is amazing although she doesn't shoot most no matter how much I try to urge her to use her camera more. She uses her iPhone a lot and gets great images. These shots were made with a Olympus point and shoot.

Comfort food

This is not a food blog but I love to eat, cook and photograph my edible works using my iPhone. Mostly I like to cook traditional fare, the comfort foods I grew up on. I have expanded my repertoire somewhat but I always return to Sicilian dishes. What else can I say  except buon appetito

Spaghetti al tonno all'olio

Spaghetti con ceci

Spaghetti con cavoli

Super cotton candy

These images all shot with my iPhone are of an event held at the town's main park. It had all sort of activities for kids. My friend Francesca has a kiosk in the park and she sella souvenirs and other touristy items. For this event she was making free cotton candy. She decided to make them as big as possible to the delight of the children. It was a wonderful event.

Sicilian carts parade

In Castellammare del  Golfo during the big feast on August, there is a parade of the traditional carts that were decked out for such events. The decorations are very colorful and the people who still care for these carts are very serious. I concentrated  mainly on the faces of these protagonists. The horses are very well behaved and kept under control otherwise people would get hurt because they all get near their horses with their smart phones to snap pictures.

Spleen sandwiches anyone?

Spleen sandwiches traditionally come from Palermo, the world capital of street food. At the many feasts, these Palermitani  vendors sell these "delicacies" among other more traditional fare. The spleen sandwich or panino con milza in Italian and pani cu a meusa in Sicilian is something for the initiated or those able to eat the unusual. In short, people that are adventurous in matters of the stomach. Actually this panino is quite tasty. It has  stewed spleen topped with fresh ricotta. I have seen it served in some Sicilian restaurants in Brooklyn where it is known as  a vastedda but the ricotta in Sicily that is made from sheep's milk is so superior that it's no comparison. Also the word vastedda is incorrectly used because it refers to a round home made bread.
