Photo of the day Cucuzzi signorini. So called snake squash - LX 3
I believe that two things ca never be of shortage in Sicily. One is eggplants. The so called Italian or Sicilian eggplants that are light purple and round, and the snake squash or, in Sicilian, cucuzzi signurini. The adjective signurini means maid or unmarried. It's a mystery why this type of squash is so named It but it's renowned for its. fresh attributes as opposed to eggplants that are hot or more irritating. In Sicily foods are divided into the frischi e cavuri [fresh or hot] categories. It's also worth noting that these categories do not apply uniformly as what is hot in one area may be fresh in another. Go figure. Yet these two vegetables are food staples and are taken very seriously here.
