Happy birthday Italy

Today it's the 150th anniversary of the creation of the Italian State. This unification, began a year earlier in Marsala, Sicily, when Garibaldi's Mille landed and freed the island from the Bourbons. The rest, as thy say, is history. A year later, the so called unification, or better the annexation of all of Italy by Piedmont under the Statuto Albertino, the constitution of Piedmont,AKA the Kingdom of Sardinia, with King Victor Emanuel as head of state and Cavour as the prime minister took effect. It should have been a republic from the very beginning. This dream was finally realized with the Italian Constitution of 1948 after a plebiscite that sent that pathetic monarchy packing. Good riddance.
So, happy Birthday Italy. Not Italy the nation that has existed since the Aeneid but Italy the state. Many more.
