La Galleria Umberto I

 This architectural gem was constructed under the reign of King Umberto I by architect Emanuele Rocco. It is similar to the  Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. The Umberto I Galleria is near the San Carlo Theater, the oldest opera house in the world while the Vittorio Emanuele II is very close to La Scala and is more famous. Both are great places to have an espresso but the espresso is much better in Naples.

Naples is perhaps one of the interesting cities in the world. A true sociological laboratory of sorts. These images date from 1990 but I noted little change in subsequent visits except for things getting more crowded. Once again we are in il quartiere spagnolo

Il monastero di Santa Chiara

This cloister is in Saint Clara's monastery in Naples, Italy. I visited this lovely place a few years ago with my Dear friend. Prof.. Amedeo Maiello who unfortunately left us too soon. He left me  countless fond memories and that is my consolation. His knowledge of Naples was second to none and we enjoyed going to the areas avoided by tourists. His hospitality was boundless.

The great food we had.......that's another story. 

Naples, the Spanish quarter

Naples is one of the most fascinating cities in Italy and along with Palermo, it offers incredible cultural and historic diversity. Palermo has more varied  and older architecture  but Naples has greater vitality. The music alone makes it a true cultural treasure. The so called Spanish quarter is one of the most interesting places to visit. It's narrow streets and varied courtyards leave one fascinated. The sounds one hears are pure music to the ear while it's great and yet unassuming restaurants are in a class by themselves. I could go on, but I can just say that I love this great city. If I weren't Sicilian, I would certainly want to be Neapolitan. It's is my second choice, but not by much.

Fenesta ca lucive e mo non luce......

A famous Neapolitan song about a window that shone once  when there was life inside the home but now, alas, is no longer shines. The Music is attributed to Vincenzo Bellini, the great Sicilian composer of  Norma, without a doubt the greatest Italian opera ever written.
This is a window in Naples that brought to mind such a window.

The Spanish quarter in Naples is absolutely fascinating. It is a rather run down area but it's also one of the oldest neighborhoods of the city. You can buy anything you want here, old or new, legal or illegal. A visit here cannot be excluded if one visits Naples.

Il vecchio quartiere spagnolo di Napoli, un quartiere di case vecchie e trascurate, e  molto affascinante. Qui, si puo' comprare tutto:  il vecchio, il nuovo, il lecito e l'illecito. Una visita pero' e' imprendiscibile.
