The ruins of Selinunte on the southern coast of Sicily. This town was destroyed by the Carthaginians about 500 BC. A very interesting place to visit.

     Selinunte is an old Greek city in Western Sicily that was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Some of the ruins have been sort of restored as best as possible but this archeological part is famous for the countless ruins. It's worth a visit.

Beauty among the ruins

Shot in Selinunte Sicily on a very hot day. I like the way the subject arches  along with the olive tree forming a coherent circle. Selinunte was razed by Carthage in one of the Punic wars. It's all ruins and pieces of monuments strewn on the ground. some have been partially reconstructed but it's a very complicated jigsaw puzzle.

Our last post on Selinunte showed what archeologists were able to re assemble from the devastation caused by the Carthaginians. Here we see the actual results of the city's destruction. Still this is a very important historical site and should not be missed.

Once more to Segesta from Agfachrome 5O slides shot in the summer of 1869 with the Canon FT and the canon 28mm F 3.5 FL. It is surprising that these slides held their color so well. Other Agfa slides faded. I believe that it was the labs that I was using. One probably was careless in the wash process.  

This spectacular Doric temple of a Carthagenian origin has stood the test of time and countless tremors that have all happened around it. Segesta was what instigated Athens to attack Siracuse thus beginning the decline of Greece and the subsequent rise of the Roman barbarians after the conclusion of the Punic wars. Yes, to us the Romans were barbarians. They were not Hellenized.
