The paese in autumnal light

Autumnal light has it's sort of magic in it's mysterious appearances. It can be captured if one is aware of it's possibilities.

They just have to be kidding

With cell phones becoming increasingly more and more used, here comes Leica with this gorgeous but ridiculously priced lens. An A for effort and I believe that all those doctors, dentists and deep pocketed non photographers may even buy a few. But for the rest of us, no cigar. Medium format is really dead on arrival. Not needed any longer.

Leica has  just announced the Elmarit-S 45 mm f/2.8 ASPH lens for its medium format S system. With an angle of view equivalent to a 35mm lens on full frame, it offers that classic moderate wide-angle field of view that was so nice on the M system rangefinders. Similar to several of the other S lenses it'll be available in two versions:  with or without an in-lens 'Central Shutter' (that allows flash sync at shutter speeds up to 1/1000 sec) Remember the M synch?         Leica is offering firmware updates for its S, S2 and S2-P cameras to give what they call an 'optimum functionality' with the lens. The Elmarit-S 45 mm f/2.8 ASPH should be in dealers shelves this month with  a price  tag of £4650, or £5500 for the CS model. These are in Pound Sterling.  In US dollars the sticker shock will be even greater. You can almost buy a  good used car instead.

Michela Musolino

Michela Musolino, is an singer of Sicilian folk song. She is born in the USA but has a great command of the medium. She was part of a musical interlude at Arba Sicula, a Sicilian association for the advancement of Sicilian culture an language. It's based at St. John's University under the tutelage of the indefatigable Professor Gaetano Cipolla. Needless to say, without any accompaniment other that the drum, she sang splendidly.

Is it all over? The 41 MP Nokia Lumia 1020 may be the coup de grace

We have been stating for quite a while that the large cameras are really for show off except for serious work that is demanding. Now fashion photography has been attempted with the Nokia 4120 MP phone. The acceleration of traditional cameras' demise is increasing. A change in the rate of acceleration is an interesting mathematical problem that needs calculus to  handle. But this is a digression. Stay tuned.

"We all know that smartphones are being equipped with better and better cameras, but few of us would ever consider using one for 'serious' photography except in an emergency. Nokia's 'conversations' blog is featuring an interesting project by its own 'camera expert', Ari Partinen and colleague Marko Saari, who wanted to see whether the new Nokia Lumia 1020, which features a 41 megapixel 'PureView' sensor, could hold its own in a studio fashion shoot. The results might surprise you"

Have a wonderful week

Morning light

I walk my dog early each morning at the local park  so I notice how the light  interacts with the trees and the grass that  still don't show any signs of fall. I have been taking along my Olynpus EPL-2 with a manual focus Voigtalnder 28mm M Leica mount lens with an adapter. I just love the Micro Four Thirds system because it allows me a great choice in lenses especially in reviving some older lenses that are optically splendid and would go unused otherwise

unused.
