This candid image is of my friend, the late Professor Amedeo Maiello. We wer at CCNY together and then he continued his studies at the Istituto Universitario Orientale in Naples where he then taught eastern studies. Unlike in the US, in Italy it's still OK to say the word orientale. The mind police is not very strong there. This man was the most hospitable person I have ever known. On the several visits to his lovely home and family wasn't even allow to pay for a caffé. He would pick me up at the airport in Rome or Naples an could not do enough for me. Friends are really one's true wealth. I'm honored by the great friendship of his widow and of the fact that his two lovely daughters call me uncle Rocco. To me they are the nieces I never had. I love them dearly. I miss this irreplaceable friend so much. Leica photo on Tri-X Pan
Baloon vendor
The main feast, la festa del ventuno . the feast of the 21st of August is a three day event starting on August 19 with a boat procession in the harbor and a huge procession in the town concluding with a very nice fireworks display. Of course, even before the 19th, the so called bancarelle , or vendor stalls are set up. They sell all sorts of items. Some typical and folkloric and other typically Chinese mostly cheap toys for children. These hark back to the times when fairs were very popular. Nevertheless they are very entertaining especially to youngsters, I peruse the book sellers and the really local food stalls that have the kind of delicacies for the initiated.

One tired lady
This photo dates from the early eighties and was shot at a fair upstate NY. It makes yo wonder why an adult would wear it. Nevertheless, it makes for a funny image
The green of summer
It's been so hot that I take some comfort in looking at images that elicit a cool feeling. These were shot an an event a few years ago. I hope you find them "refreshing."
