The feast
The tradition of the feasts in urban areas is a continuation of an old world tradition dating back to the medieval period when fairs were very important. Then, as religious institutions became stronger the patron saint and other "protector saints" got celebrated with appropriate feasts. It was the only entertainment available for the masses. Italian immigrants carried this tradition over and these feasts are still celebrated with great vigor. In an era where there's too much entertainment these outdoor events still draw great crowds. These photos were shot at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel feast. The neighborhood has become hipsterized but these newcomers find the feast
very charming. Soon there will probably be vegan food outlets. So far,
the sausage and pepper stands still hold on to their primary position
but this may change soon.
